Your Free Notebook Guide But 3D films really gained in popularity in the 1950s which is often referred to as the Golden Era of 3D movies. While some 3D films were released throughout the 80s and 90s, it wasn't until Avatar hit the screens in 2009 that interest in this new 3D technology was seriously renewed. However, it is in the field of computer video gaming where 3D may have its biggest impact. We are only at the beginning stages of a major revolution in how people play their computer/electronic/videogames. But make no mistake about it, 3D is quietly entering stage right and auditioning for the leading role. All the pieces are falling into place and there are a whole list of events leading up to this moment. For true gamers, maybe the3D gaming revolution really started when NVIDIA finally released its GeForce 3D Vision Kit. This kit which includes 3D glasses and powerful graphics software which can be used to turn your computer system into a 3D one. The only other major component you need is 120Hz 3D Ready monitor to properly display the 3D effects. Two leading LCD makers, Samsung and Viewsonic already have monitors to fill that demand. Plus, we have the introduction of 3D TVs from Samsung and Sony which will further push 3D into the spotlight. Sony, who is probably the leader in gaming (forget Microsoft for a moment) has shown signs it is totally embracing the new true 3D gaming experience. First, it is introducing new 3D TVs, 38 models in all, ranging from 22" to 60" in size. Next, Sony is on record as saying it is turning many of its major products such as Vaio PCs, PS3 game machines and Blu-ray players, all 3D in 2010. Now back to the xBox, which Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg has stated can fully handle 3D games, but some gamers wonder at the quality of these 3D images or games. Regardless, it seems Microsoft is playing the waiting game here to see if 3D is a passing fad or not. Their loss if they're wrong. It should also be mentioned that Nintendo, the world's largest maker of video-game players, is turning to 3D with the DS3. Although, even here there are some reservations from Nintendo/Sony marketing bigwigs questioning the broad mass appeal of the 3D aspect? Will young users be that captivated by the 3D effects? It should also be noted, unlike the xBox, the Nintendo DS will use a 3D system which does not use glasses. One has to admit, the major drawback with 3D has to be those awkward, some times silly looking glasses. Most systems use Polarized 3D glasses which creates the 3D illusion by restricting the amount of light that can reach each eye. Then there are the somewhat more complicated 3D Shutter Glasses which are controlled by infrared, radio frequency or a Bluetooth transmitter to send timing signals to darken one eye and then the other in sync to display different perspectives for each eye - this method is called the Alternate-Frame Sequencing and is often used in many modern 3D gaming systems. However, if new 3D technologies can be utilized without glasses then the potential for 3D is limitless and not just for gaming. The real world applications would be endless and would truly revolutionize the workplace as well as our living rooms. Some major electronic companies are working on 3D systems which don't need special glasses. Whether they succeed in producing effective "Autostereoscopic" 3D systems still remains to be seen. Although, in the world of gaming, using special glasses isn't such a barrier because gamers are accustomed to using special gadgets and gizmos to get the ultimate gaming experience. If 3D improves and enhances that experience - gamers will embrace this new technology with open thumbs. Dazzle them and they will come. All indications from reports of 3D demonstrations at the recent CES in Las Vegas - viewers were dazzled and amazed by the 3D offerings. Once people see 3D TVs, Monitors and gaming systems as a superior viewing experience than what's currently on the market - they will open their pocketbooks. Whether there will be a large enough base for 3D products among customers who have just upgraded they living rooms with all those flat-screen HDTVs remains to be seen. However, in the killing fields of gaming, all systems for 3D are set to go. We are even seeing 3D gaming laptops hitting the marketplace, which are using the 120Hz 3D Ready displays and Nvidia 3D Vision Kits or similar systems. Both Dell and HP are rumored to have 3D gaming laptops in the pipeline. Also, we are seeing many more 3D movies being released in theaters, if they become the norm rather than the exception, then we will know 3D has truly arrived. Once people see these movies in theaters, they will want to view them again in the comfort of their homes, but how many will shell out the big bucks for a 3D system to get that experience has yet to be determined. But as more and more companies jump on the 3D bandwagon, there maybe no stopping this train. The drawback of not having enough 3D content may slow it down a bit, but if these 3D products giveviewers what they're looking for, then there may be no stopping this new 3D visual revolution.
