Your Free Notebook Guide Most people are really excited about the whole prospect of bringing the 3D experience into their homes. They want to re-capture the same 3D experience they had in the theatres, watching such films as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland. Well, manufacturers are betting this is the case, and they are unveiling 3D TVs and Blu-ray Players... promising the consumer great looking high-definition 3D quality right in the comfort of their own homes. However, along with all this excitement, there also comes a lot of unanswered questions. Many are skeptical and somewhat cautious about 3D and this is probably a very good approach to take. This is a relatively new technology and not much is really known about how it actually works or whether it can even deliver on the promise of a better viewing experience? Besides, 3D has come and gone so many times, it should probably change its name to 'The Comeback Kid'. Regardless, here are some quick facts about 3D technology and some of the hardware you will need to really bring that 3D experience into your homes. You will need a new 3D TV Guess what? Your brand-new high definition flat screen TV which you just bought will NOT be able to play all the latest 3D Blu-ray movies or even display any type of 3D content for that matter. There is no God! In order to enjoy all the latest 3D technology you must have a new 3D capable television set. Now there are some manufacturers who are selling 3D-Ready TVs, but you will need a converter box to get the full benefit. However, some major electronic makers such as Samsung, Sony and Panasonic are making 3D HDTVs without a converter box. These 3D TVs will still have the standard 2D display but they are much more expensive - usually running at leas 20% higher in price. You will need 3D Glasses Without 3D glasses, even on high priced 3D TVs mentioned above, you will only see a blurred image. This is caused by the 3D TV quickly alternating between two images and you need the 3D glasses to process these alternating images by opening and closing shutters on the glasses, one for each eye. These glasses give us a perception of depth to produce the 3D effect. These glasses are battery operated and wireless. They should have the same manufacturer as the TV. In fact a pair of glasses is sometimes included when purchasing a 3D Television. Any extra pairs will have to be purchased separately and are priced anywhere from $100 to $150. For a very large family or your next 3D party - this can get expensive. 3D Capable Blu-ray Player Is Required Now in order to enjoy the latest movie blockbusters or old classics in 3D, you will probably need to buy a 3D capable Blu-ray Player. Before long, you can also use the Sony's PlayStation 3, which Sony is planning to upgrade to 3D in the Summer of 2010. Other Blu-ray players will also follow Sony's lead and provide a firmware 3D upgrade. In a recent press release, Cyberlink Corp. announced that PowerDVD was the first Blu-ray 3D player software to get certification from the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association), under a new Blu-ray 3D standard Profile 5.0. You can expect the prices for these new 3D Blu-ray players to be the same price as regular players. For example: Sony's BDP-S470 (3D Firmware upgrade summer, 2010) has a list price of under $200.00. 3D will not just be for Movies While 3D movies may be the big attraction for most people, there are not a lot of 3D movies available. An estimate of about 20 to 25 3D movies will be released this year in 2010, but with the promise of more to come and being able to see older movies, like Titanic in 3D, it is easy to see the appeal. But there will also be 3D content via TV channels and video games. A sports channel, ESPN 3D will be launched June of 2010. It is slated to show over 80 events. The 2010 Masters golf tournament will have 3D cameras there to capture all the action. And Sony, Discovery and IMAX are all launching 3D channels in the near future. Content, while scarce right now, should be abundant in a year from now. Will I need new HDMI Cables? Currently, there may be some confusion as to what type of HDMI cable is required for 3D, but if anyone should tell you that you need the new HDMI 1.4 cable, do not believe them. This is simply untrue since any HDMI high speed cable will work. Consumer Reports states, "any high-speed HDMI cable is sufficient for sending and receiving 3D video streams." In fact you should not even be able to buy HDMI 1.4 cables. Cable manufacturers are not allowed to market cables called HDMI 1.4. The terms for describing HDMI cables are as follows: HDMI Standard, HDMI High Speed, HDMI Standard with Ethernet, HDMI High Speed with Ethernet, and HDMI Standard Automotive. As stated before the PlayStation 3 is getting a 3D firmware upgrade soon so you will be able to have the 3D experience while playing your favorite 3D games. Of course, 3D will not just be limited to consoles and 3D TVs. There are 3D gaming laptops available, such as the ASUS G51J-3D and the Acer AS5738DG-6165. No matter what happens with 3D, you can be assured, with all the current interest in 3D movies and 3D content, investing in a good quality 3D system for your home will not be waste of your entertainment dollars. 3D will probably become the next big "Must Have" thing in home entertainment.
